GLBTQ Jamaica was officially set up in June 2009 with a view to address issues pertinent to the LGBTQ communities in Jamaica. Primarily designed to enhance forumatic activities via the two blogs in existence and a NING members page. I presently operate from home with meetings at "safe spaces" where possible with members of the community.
It is my intention to expand on the present structure formally by registering the name of the organization hopefully as a NON-Profit, not an easy task here in Jamaica given the homophobic environment lgbt groups and individuals have to exist in. It is far easier to register as a limited liability entity then later tackle the categorization for NGO status which can take up to three years.
Planned activities:
HIV/AIDS intervention with young msms (18 - 25 years old) in particular, Crisis intevrention for abused GLBTQ individuals to provide emergency funding and housing in the recovery process, Documentation and archiving of homophobic attacks, referrall services for abused persons, capacity buiding for key persons of interest for self efficacious activity within the various target groups, Liaising/partnerships with other tolerant NGOs on rights based issues outside of GLBTQ issues, workshops/seminars to include self improvement/development courses, maintenance of the two blogs and future website development.
blogs:
